4 August 2004 0047 Cells to west are slowly collapsing. Watching to see if ClimoNear will be needed - yes, will do that next scan. MCS to NW finally leaving scope. Some strong cells to SE @ > 160 km range; heading for coast. 0300 James Done and David Ahijevych arrived. 0500 Raining at site. Stratiform precipitation associated with multicell activity traveling NW (missed Mazatlan area). Scattered activity over northern SMO (popcorn convection). More cells now along the SMO range in the radar domain. 0600 Line of cells formed to the north of radar site over the coastal plain, and more cells triggering over the southeast radar domain over high orography. 0615 Rain the profiler sequen ce during stratiform precipitation. 0630 Back to ClimoNear. 0740 Landbreeze emerges, possibly in association with a cold pool outflow from the stratiform precip system - now only just clearing from above the radar site. 0812 General point - all storms that developed over the high terrain (during today's shift) dissipated as they tracked NW over the coastal plain. But independent cells triggered over the coastal plain. 0815 This scan (ClimoNear) didn't start until 08:18:54 for some reason and so finished at 08:31:13. I caught it at 08:37 in time to restart and get a rain map before restarting at 08:45. 0900 General point: Convective triggering/intensification appears to conistently occur over the southeast radar domain over high terrain (114 km from radar at 134 deg). 1200 Sarah & Gustavo here. 1245 Switched to ClimoFar. 1345 Switched to ClimoShallow. 1800 Switched to ClimoFar. Convection developed in past 15-30 min WSW of radar at 60 km to where it's not topped by 6.7 deg anymore. Steve N. and Simona B. here. 2110 Some storms have fired to the E of the radar and are moving this way. Storms have collapsed. over the ocean and only some boundaries remain. Will stay in ClimoFar until anvils of storms to E approach or something else approaches. 2130 ClimoNear - storm to NE topped. 2323 Scattered storms still apparent over land with little organization (yet). A stronger cell has developed along 120 deg radial and 100 km range that is nearly stationary. 2336 Cell to SE seems to be somewhat orographically forced - convection not really reaching tropopause.
