01 August 2004 0031 Convection continues to sink SSE along foothills. Still 30dBZ at 13.8deg so no climofar yet 0117 Status quo pretty much. System continues to slide slowly Sward. Startiform area has expanded; still not huge coverage given intensity and duration of convection. Will have to watch for stratiform rain at the profiler this evening. 0121 Anvil is spreading NWward from the line of convection over us -> stratiform rain may develop if these ice particles ever fall. 0134 Stratiform rain (~25dBZ) is breaking out near the profiler site. Will run profiler scan next volume. Can see nice brightband on upper elevation scans. 0145 Running profiler scan - nice bright band in RHI's +25dBz rain in PPI's. 0200 Back to ClimoNear - 0.8deg scan corrupted? Pie shaped again, anvil rain fairly widespread to north. 0248 Light rain at SPOL, stratiform coverage diminishing to NE. Bright band echo in 1.3deg scan impressive to NNE. MCS may be approaching from SE. 0300 Gustavo here 0400 A few cells have developed 150km NNW of S-POL and attained reflectivities of up to 55dBz in their cores. Otherwise, all echoes are centered over land, dissipating and moving from SE to NW. 0600 All echoes topped out at 13.8deg, switched to climo far. The convective cells present at 04 UTC are still intense. Everything else decaying. 0630 Convective cells to NNW still developing, moving opposite to the flow of other cells. Located ~120km from S-Pol, somewhat a linear cluster. Part of this line is now over water. 0730 The line of convective cells has dissipated. All echoes over land are decaying. One cluster has entered S-Pol range at 315deg and is propagating along the coastline and over the water. 0945 Coastal cluster decaying. All echoes below 5.5deg. Switched to ClimoShallow. 1000 A convective cell developed over the Gulf, WNW of S-Pol. 1100 The maritime convective cell is decaying and generating 1200 Sarah here (land breeze fine line visible) 1205 Some weak echoes up to ~20dBz seen NE of radar w/in 60km range...will switch to ClimoFar to try to top them. 1215 Switched to ClimeFar, and noticed weak new echo ~15km range east of radar, as well as some to SE w/in 60 km range. The echo ~15km range is non-precipitation stratus (based on visual). 1237 Cells to NE are dying, may switch back to climoShallow. 1245 Back to ClimoShallow. Land breeze fine line has dissipated. 1300-1500ish A few cells along northern end of old fine line growing and decaying. ~1415 Scans got off time somehow...first noticed it in Zebra & though a few scans just didn't transfer over b/c by 1418 they were showing up...but by 1430 the scan was on 4.2deg let sequence finish. 1432 Restarted Climo-shallow 2 min late due to problem noted above. 1445 restarted scan sequence to resync properly 1515 Ran rain map and stopped for 15 min solar scan 1530 Restarted ClimoShallow, only one weak and shallow echo to WNW, so let techs stop it after rain map for another solar scan. 1556 techs started ClimoShallow after finishing solar scan work. * There was a problem starting it at 1551 -(ignore sweeps 1551-1556) 1600 Stopped scan sequence and restarted ClimoShallow to sync up. However no echoes are present in range... 1730 Mostly clear still...though some weak echoes are forming past 150km range to NE of radar. 1800 Nesbitt here -- Running ClimoShallow 1906 A few cells to NE at 150+km rainge moving NW. Still no echo at 5.5deg elevation, so will stay in ClimoShallow. Very supressed behind yesterday's wave passage. 1913 Sounding shows little shear + dry layer between 850-650mb. Only 350J of CAPE with 184J CIN. Tomorrow looks more promising as WV image shows a tropical wave approaching from SE. 1952 Barely topping one cell at 5.5deg at 120km range, 045 azimuth. Will examine next 5.5deg scan to see if still topped. 2009 Storms continue to pulse up and down in terrain above 7000ft. 2046 Lone cell popped up over Gulf, one cell on SBF NW at 100km range. Another cell to SE along 2145 ClimoFar mode - cell along sea breeze finally broke cap to NW 2249 Another cell popped along 330 radial to replace previous cell -> other convection still limited to mountains. 2308 Noted second trip to SE - a large MCS is located along coast well south of Mazatlan. May link up with convection in east part of domain -> stay tuned!
