20 July 2004 0010 Echoes continue to develop over SMO and die before reaching coast. We have been under stratiform anvil for several hours (non-precipitating). 0045 Back to ClimoFar - not topping echo to NE but this is non precip stratiform - so will stick w/ better resolution - at least for now. 0130 Boring, boring, boring 0200 Watching echo mass coming off SMO, moving W-NW. Still about 100-150 km out (SE of SPOL) but bears watching. 0300 Dave Ahijevych here. 0530 ClimoShallow 1100 There hasn't been anything to worry about. Now the scope is empty except for mtns and insects. Most suppressed shift I've seen in my 10 days here. 1145 Note: Zebra particle types have not updated since 19-Jul, 21:30. Ask Scott Ellis or Joe V. why. Is this a problem in archiving. 1800 RC, Brenda, & Simone on site. Rain gauge is empty. Radar down for Ka-band from 1200 to 1800. Radar back-up in ClimoShallow - Some cell activity over SMO. 1830 Switched to ClimoFar to top cell activity. 1910 There seems to be a problem with V-data collection, since we started today @ 1800. So no vertical data has been collected. A switch was in wrong position, but now it is OK. 2108 Lost power to the RAID (some systems hung, but not sure the effect on data collection). Seeing some light echoes over the mountains, but they die quickly. 2130 There is a cell NE of SPOL. Echo is topping out at 11 deg and is at 40 km. 2315 There is more stuff developing over the mountains. There is a cell to the NNE with reflectivities in the 50-55 dBZ. Particle ID identifies it as heavy rain with maybe some graupel. R-Kdp rainrates of about 100 mm/hr. Range at 80 km. 2316 Changed to the ClimoNear scanning mode.
