10 July 2004 0345 returned to radar, started climoeasy w/slower spin & higher angles to account for lower PRF 0356 antenna stopped for some reason think it was for a sync, just happened early. restarted and will resynch at 0400. lots of anvil and strat precip out there 0400 climo easy goes to 11.3 deg and has 0 deg ppi. will let this run for now until i get bearings. could probably do 7 deg per sec in climo mode. 0415 synched fine, still running 6 deg per sec. test pulse does not exist at furthest range, vut a bit closer with data further out 0433 at 860.3 hz prf, max range is 174 km, but test pulse is screwing up long range look. right now, climo easy tuned for low-prf ops, don't use profiler scans - renamed not used for now; very stratiform rain situation. will rename climo easy, climolowprf 0415 manual restart to allow name change to take effect 0545 some stratiform precip still exists 0615 anvil still about but strat precip pretty much gone near sfc; adding rhi's looking along 240 deg to get sea breeze. multiple bug rings at different altitudes. actually rhi's to 60 deg to look at anvil. 0630 turned off rhis, can insert or not. insert in seq if desired. 0645 stopped and started rain map at 6 deg/sec in name_climo while i rename name_easy and fix name_climo 0700 restarted lowprf climo scans with no rhi. pretty quiet except for some anvil aloft. 0845 bumped climo up to 13.1 elev, 7 deg/sec scan rate. now running newly created shallow sequence, up to 6.4 deg twice, 7 deg/sec az rate. just anvil right now, nothing else. 0900 started shallow a bit late, boosting antenna speed to 7.1 deg/sec 0909 coral snake under seatainer 0915 messed up restart of shallow again, hopefully will synch properly next round 0930 sync ok, trying 0.8-1.8 for rain map elevation scans. 0945 back to regular rain map angles 1024 azimuthal spacing at 860.2 hz prf, 100 hits 8 deg/s - 0.93 deg 7.1 - 0.83 } so currently running a little wide, 7 - 0.81 } but still pretty good az spacing 6.9 - 0.8 6.5 - 0.76 6 - 0.7 from chill optimizer, s-pol specs az spacing at 960 hz, 8 deg/sec, 100 hits is 0.83 deg. so actually we are running fine right now, no worse than before (goal was 0.8 deg spacing) 1130 still a little on the scrn, will give techs radar at 1200 utc 1820 dave ahijevych taking over after bob rilling left the chair. moving to another scan set: name_lowprf.scn 1828 started climoshallow scan sequence 1834 840 prf climoscans is the new goal. 178.5 km radius. 6.7 deg az rate. 960 prf is going to be used for the microphysical sectors. 1847 new 840 prf established - nope still working. 1849 slowing azimuth rate from 7.1 deg/sec to 6.7 deg/sec on shallow scan and far scan from 6.9 deg/sec to 6.7 deg/sec. changing 0 deg scan from 7 deg/sec to 6.7 deg/sec 1900 removed 6.4 deg angle from shallow scan sequence. should run for 836 sec. changing far angles to fo up to 15 deg. keeping same number of angles (15). changing first 3 angles to 0.8, 1.3, 1.8. 1925 jon lutz is still trying the new prf. 1930 looking at name_micro.scn. 1933 going to change the rain map scan to 0.8, 1.3, 1.8 deg. did it. 1938 switched back to name_lowprf.scn. testing length of climonorhi. 7:39:51- should finish before 7:54:51. 1943 sorry about all of these changes, tim!! steve and rit decided to use 2 different prf's: one for climatology (840 hz) and one for microphysics (960 hz). a 6.7 deg azimuthal scan rate will accompany the 840 hz (according to SR's calculations) and 8 deg/sec will go with the microphysics scans. we should stay in one or the other for hours at a time except in the rare case of a signifcant storm outside of the 960 hz prf range that would be captured within the 840 hz prf. (this could happen when the storms reform over the high ridge to the NE of S-Pol). deleted(when this occurs, and you are in the microphysics mode, you must ask the radar tech, every top of the hour, to switch from 960 to 840 hz so that a simple 3-tilt rain map can be run. as soon as this completes, switch back to microphysics prf (960 hz) and continue with microphysics scans.)end deletion 2000 testing the duration of climonorhi. should be ~14:55. As last time, it was actually 14:45. 2016 i think we;ve been transmitting/recording after the prf change. now we get out to 180 km or so. 2030 switched back to climo shallow scan seq. no need to test the duration of climonorhi any more. the last iteration ran 14:40. 2105 at 90 km, from 60-90 deg there is a growing area of isolated storms. 2105 will need to add another set of low angle tilts that run on a 5-minute interval. "surveillence" set will be run sort of like climoeasy was run. when there is nothing there, there is no operator input needed. would want ~710 hz prf. jon still needs to test this out. 2127 will run rhi on it. 2133 64-78 2133 back to climo shallow 2141 trying microscan. far 135. changed to 960 hz prf. started 2144. 2200 right before starting microfar 135 we did a couple of rhi's on strong cell at 55 km, 120 deg. 2234 discussing making a ~710 hz prf and testing it now, but jon's not around at this moment. 2236 stopping radar - creating new .scn file. new angle set 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.3, 1.8 2250 ~600 Hz PRF, 6.7 deg/sec 2305 testing new higher angles. trying to see mountain anvil seen on satellite. at 200 km between 60 and 90 deg azimuth. 2318 I am only now starting to understand how the .scn files are created and saved. 2321 switching back to 840 hz prf for name_lowprf.scn/climoshallow. 2329 running rhi's at 108 deg. 2331 switched back to climoshallow.
