Analysis of the 15 February Event

Summary

On 15 February, the S-Pol radar sampled several periods of convective activity over the NOAA profiler pair , NASA 2DVD disdrometer, the Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer, and the 4 rain gauge networks using a customized "rapid update" scanning strategy (click here for information on the radar scans strategies that were implemented during LBA) The scanning strategy consisted of relatively narrow sectors over the profiler site at alternating elevation angles (0.7 and 1.2 deg) in a 19-tilt sequence. This allowed for a sample to be collected over the profiler site approximately every 5-10 seconds while the rapid update scan was run (0345-0433 UTC over the profiler and 0345-0717 UTC over all the rain gauge networks). The purpose of this scan strategy was to provide high resolution polarimetric measurements that could be compared to corresponding drop size distribution measurements from the profilers, disdroemters, and rain gauges.
