08 August 2004 0130 Storms approached, dumped on, and are dissipating over Mazatlan. Cells to the east tend to be forming a N-S convective line about 50km E of S-POL. 0156 Cells not quite merged to E, still propagating towards radar. System to N @ 150 km range becoming more organized. Cell just to SE of radar may hold together to yield precipitation at S-Pol. 0245 Switching bacfk to ClimoFar. System to the N @ 150km range has organized on a (?) line off convective cells - higher (?) reflectivities (?) > 55dBZ. There is still some stratoform left over from previousw convection close to the radar, to East but no convection cell is observed within 50km, and newly formed cells are propagating away from radar. So m-i to (?) vertical resolution - the systemj to N, we decided to switch back to ClilmoFar. 0314 Noticed 14deg scan did not record completelyh...? 0400 James Done arrives. 0430 Switched to ClimoNear because systej to the East is tracking due West toward the radar and new cells are firing within 15km of radar. 0500 Nice boltws of lightnigh just outside and heavy rain. Isolated active cell overhead. The regions of convection are decreasing in area and intensity in all three regions. The northerly system is now almost entirely stratiform. 0545 Explosive thunder outswide has set the frogs off. Heavy rain. 0070 Systems dissipating and now entirely stratiform. One is overhead with brightband ~4.2km New system is pushing into the far South of the domain at ~150deg(over the water) May go to microphysics mode if it gets closer. Still raining with 1cm in the guage (although it was surrounded by plants.) 0815 Landbreeze shows up in 0.0deg scan parallel to coast 26km from radar. 0915 For some reason the new scan didn't automatically start so I did it manually at 0916. Will lose the last 360deg to start 0930 on time. 0930 Switched to MicroFar 135 to capture land-breeze convection center 227deg. 0945 Switched to MicroFar 90 because most of it fits into a 90deg sector. center 205deg. 1145 Back to ClimoShallow 1200 Sarah here 1530 New Cells forming at Southern end of land breeze. (S of S-Pol) otherwise quite suppressed so far. 1930 afternoon convection over mountains finally began... some echoes show up at 5.5, will wait for next 6.7 to monitor their heigtht and decide to switch to climoFar 1945 Switched to ClimFar because cell NE of radar at 90km had started to show up at last 5.5 and 6.7deg but was stronger in last 5.5 too 2000 Simona here 2030 Some cells have started developing on the foothills and mountains to the SE, S sector, Still in ClimoFar mode, as there are some cells that are not topped in ClimoShallow. Some of the (?) isolated cells to SE have now started (?); a new line is now apparent in radar scope, at range 120-150km, aligned SW-NE. PID shows some hail in the higher reflectivity cells. 2045 (?) this system keeps getting closer, thinking about switching to microphysical scan. 135deg should get all afternoon activity. 2055 Activity seems to be hung up to N of S-Pol as well; and may be too late to capture life-cycle of system; so staying in climotological mode. 2115 Switching to MicroFar 135.Convection to N has (?) isolated and is (?). So decided to form a scan to E, SE sector to do life-cycle study of system to SE; (?) cells are at ~80-120km. 2118 Scan (?) (?) at 9:18; (?) (?) Bob was changing the PRF so took a while to do. I will try to start things up. Then this won't be a problem! RHI at 121.3deg, through strangest cells. There are some cells (which are ?) to East of S-Pol which might (?) are not topped, but I rather have better vertical resolution on larger system. 2129 I am still a bit late but (?) (?) system scan while large system is being topped. There is another system which isw now developing to SW; getting larger too. 2131 1:30 minutes late for rain map. RHI @ 108.7deg, lots of high reflectivities + stratoform region. 2145 Slightly re-adjusting the center of section scan at 82.5deg, as cells to SW have stratiform region (?) (?) scanned. Re-synched - Now should be OK with the time. RHI @ 124.1 deg. 2200 Switched to MicroNear 135 (it wasw a tough decision though) but I (?) (?) top a high (?) cellat ~30km range to SW. At 16 deg elevation, dBZ ran still around 30 dBZ RHI @ 126.;4 deg though nice cell close to radar. 22:27 Cell close to radar still {?)(?), with strong low level convergence. Maybe some folding in velocity. Still nothing over the water. 2250 There is some convective action popping up to N, NE in between 100km - 150 km range. The sections scan is not covering it completely, but at least covers highest dBZ cells. Adjoining the center not the section though would made me now cover completely. System to SE that I have been watching. Seems worth to keep scanning this one completely. System to SE that I have been watching seems worth to keep scanning this one comnpletely though it's life-cycle. Of convection to N becomes more organized, then I will either re-center the sector scan or go to Climotropical mode. Surveillance scans keep showing nothing over ocean, all velocity (?) into elevation (?) 2322 RHI@ 17.3 through line of cells. Isolated cells that I was keeping an eye on to NE have organized in a nice line. 2340 System to SE dying out. New convection if hung on mountains to N ~60km of S-Pol. Also (?) (?) show some cells to NW appearing on radar scope. (?) of all (?) things together points that it is time to switch back to lower PRF. Bob (?) us to change PRF with antenna OK to give him some time, I stopped scan at 2342. I hope that this wont come too big af a data loss. 2345 ClimoNear, to top convection close to S-Pol 0020 Some cells in the N-NE section at 30 km range are raining out A new cell is coming up the radar domain in SE 0050 The Real Time Display (RAD1) has been "acting up" in a weird way when we switched to the high PRF. Bob thinks this is due to air conditioning not cooling enough in the transmitter room. This 'thickening' has been going in and out and has finally stopped now. This is the first time I saw this happening.
