07 August 2004 0016 Previous scan was probably late so that rain map was not started on at 0015. Noticed it at 0016 and restarted it one mintute late. From rain map it is evident that there is not much going on outside the 135 sector. There was some convection going on to W of SPOL, but never appeared particularly organised, now it has dissipated. Even the system we are scanning in microphysical mode does not show any particularly strong convection. Not really sure what the best place for RHI is. There seems to be a spot of higher reflectivities ahead of stratiform at 50.1degrees and 60km range. RHI get this azimuth. Will have to stop and resynch the rainmap 0030 Resynched 0043 Going back to low PRF. Will do a scan in climofar to see what is within the scope. There is a cell at 40km range just to N of SPOL. Not sure it will be topped in climofar. But there is also something else popping up to NNW ~150km so we will see after 1st scan in climofar. 0045 Climofar started. 0100 The guy to the north of SPOL is not being topped (at 14deg, still 30dBZ) Switching to climonear. 0130 ClimoFar - convection up close has lost intensity. 0300 James Done arrives 0330 Switched to climoshallow because the distant convection is being topped by 6.7deg el scan. 0500 Weak convection in the 0-90degree sector becoming weaker. 0630 Almost nothing on the radar scope 0715 Land-breeze front propagating off-shore (seen in 0.0 degree scans). 0800 Switched to climofar because 6.7deg was not topping new cells along the land-breeze front ~20km from the radar. 0830 Back to climoshallow since 6.7deg is topping the land-breeze convection. 1000 One convective cell along the land-breeze front extends up to 8km. 1030 Changed to climofar to top cell 1115 Changed to climonear to top cell 1200 Sarah and Gustavo here. [On drive here ~1100 nice isolated cell producing IC and CG lightning LRF ~ 10/min very picturesque flashes! Lightning diminished by ~1120, on radar cell was ~50km from SPOL.] 1215 ONly echo above 14deg is anvil with no sfc echo - switched to climofar 1230 New development just north of anvil (~30km SSE of radar) so switched back to climonear. 1250 Nice line of cells visible from radar to S,SW. Occasional lightning (CG,IC) with cell at ~50km south of SPOL. 1435 All that's left from line of cells to SW is anvil at 13.8deg but even it is diminishing. If it continues to diminish in this volume then will switch to climofar (the anvil has no sfc echo any longer). Newest convection now forming along northern end of land-breeze boundary (WNW of SPOL) at ~75km. 1445 Switched to climofar 1515 Cells to WNW dying, may switch to climoshallow soon. 1545 cells have died . . . only anvil left. Ran rainmap then did solar scan. 1601 Ran rainmap then stopped again for Ka-band solarscan 1618 Started climoshallow after solar was complete (3 min late from 15min mark though. * .8 deg scan is not full in zebra. 1633 Started climoshallow again since it ran over. 1645 Stopped climoshallow early to resynch scans 1825 afternoon convection over the mountains is beginning. 2000 Steve and Simona here. 2012 Some cells popping to E in mountain locations. 2125 There are two cells to the E and NE at range 70-80km that are not being topped. 2130 Switched to climofar 2213 There are some cells (that for the moment are not showing any high degree of organisation) that have strated to develop over higher terrain to E -SE sector and that are propagating towards SPOL. Also seeing cells here developed to N over mountains. As we are not topping stratiform region associated with cells to E ~30km we are switching to climonear. 2215 Climonear. 2332 Some degree of organization in cells north-east of Mazatlan. Some decent phase shift. Otherwise isolated cells continue to fire in the higher terrain, with a few along the coastal front.
