25 July 2004 0015 Switched to climofar. Cells we were watching nearby have weakened substantially. Large anvil remnants remain and are visible in satellite imagery. Scattered convection to the N/NE, no noticeable organization. 0100 Nitrogen delivered. Mini-tour given to 2 delivery personnel by Rob C – they were interested in what we were doing and why we were here - they live in La Cruz. 0246 Antenna stopped - restarted in ClimoFar mode. Will resynch at 0300. 0300 Dave A and Gustavo here. 0415 (approx) Climoshallow - nothing out there. 1145 Some activity to the southeast moving in range >120km. Still below 5deg elevation. 1200 Simona and Andrea here. 1228 Radar down to work on the Ka band. We discussed with Dave A before he left and he thought this would be a good time for sorting out the radar. There is a system that has been building to the southeast of the radar, at 200- 150 km range over land. Still appears not particularly impressive but it seems to be upgrowing and propagating to NW towards the radar. We are keeping an eye on IR images. 1310 We did a surveillance scan in ClimoFar mode to check what the precip over the SE looks like at this time. It has grown and propagated towards the radar. Tops as high as 13km so we'll take the radar back up. We will run a MicroFar135 sector. Just waiting for the engineers. 1329 Radar off. 1333 Sector scan in high PRF centered at 120deg, same for RHI. We will synchronize it back to full 15 minutes at 1345. 1345 Resynching Far PPI135. With this PRF we may not be seeing as far as we should but we seem to be getting most of the convection. We will keep an eye on evolution and if things don't fit we'll switch to ClimoFar scan. 1355 Changed the RHI angle to 128 deg. 1429 RHI shows that this guy has a big anvil(!). We are still not sure if we're getting all the convection, but we should be and it still seems as though this is moving towards the radar. 1503 A convergence line has been persistent at ~40km over the ocean since we started this shift. It appears that some new convection has been generated along this line _130km range in the SE sector (~150 deg). 1521 Changed RHI to 107deg to capture strongest cell activity (~130km) >50dBZ in core, large anvil to NW. 1600 Changed back to 720Hz PRF, ClimoFar mode. Large system to SE has weakened, appears to be dissipating. Offshore convergence line flare-up weakened and merged with larger system. Most active convective area (100-110deg, 80- 100km) has ~40-50dBZ in core and appears to be weakening. ClimoFar should capture the remainder of evolution. 1800 R/C at radar - no rain in gauge. 1815 Radar down for Ka-band work. 1852 Restarted SPOL on ClimoFar mode. Will resynch on the hour. 2030 A few weak cells ~30km east that we're not quite topping - may need to go to nears, Other than this, just a few cells ~150km away. NE over favored initiation region. 12Zaz sounding showing pronounced dry layer between 700-900mb. Same deal on Los Mochis 16:56 and. 2nd trip showing up over SMO region. 2145 Echo area fraction increasing across NE sector - no organization, just scattered cells. 2230 Bumping to ClimoNear to top cells nearby to our N.
