23 July 2004 0115 Switching to ClimoFar as activity is moving well to north. One except in N-S line about 60 km west which we are currently topping < 14 deg looks like ~6.5" in rain gauge. 0225 Line to our west slowly moving N but there are several cell clusters to S of this line that all appear to be associated with some kind of boundary. Tops 14-15 km, with dBZ cores 50-53; moderate phase shift 1-1.5deg/km but limited ZDR columns. 0245 Going to ClimoNear to top line of cells to west. 0300 Dave Ahijevych & Arturo here. 0344 Watching north-south line of cells, 75 km west of S-Pol. Not quite as linear as 30 min ago, as it has put down gust front boundaries and 2nd generation cells are more spread out on the edges of the cold pool. 0420 A fine line met the storns from the east and they flared up - now 50 km to the west of S-Pol. 0830 Some intense storms close by - hear thunder inside. Active areas needs to narrow a little more to merit a sector scan. 0850 Switching to 960 Hz PRF. Arturo driving MicroNear135 0903 Surprising so much initiation over water. 0930 Line of strong cells right on the coastline 60-120 km NW of the radar. 1007 Shifted clock-wise a little bit to keepo them in the sector. 1017 Think I'll drop back to Climo 720 Hz PRF at 1028. Storms are too spread out for sectors and the ones we are following up close have weakened considerably. 1030 Started ClimoNear. Test pulse is contaminating the survey scan. 1032 Restarted ClimoNear. Removed 26.4deg for a while to catch up. From 0900-1030 ran with high PRF. 1045 Bumped off 0deg scan and resynced start of ClimoNear with 1045. Also reinserted 26.4deg to the angle list. 1049 Blob of precip. 80 km to the east. 1138 Lots of near-coastal oceanic development. Shallow stratiform mostly. 1200 Brenda Dolan, Gustavo Pereira and Simona Bordoni taking over Still running ClimoNear. 1237 Brenda emptied the rain-gauge, which had ~ 1 cm. We are guessing that this was already reported yesterday by Rob. 1240 Line of convective cells has been developing to the south of S-Pol over ocean. at 1230, it appeared pretty coherent; core reflectivities in the ~ 50 dBZ range; there is another broad region of convective activity to NW of S-Pol. 1413 The line of convective cells to South has spread out, being now less linear that what it was before. Another line of convective cells is now observed to the west of S-Pol, NW-SE oriented, at ~80-120 km range, topping at ~ 12km. 1438 Sprinkling outside... 1605 We have been scanning in ClimoNear up to now. We have been keeping an eye on the system over the ocean to SW. It appears as a persistent and linear MCS; the line ot oriented parallel to the coast. It appears to be propagating towards the coast, then dissipates and the line of cells regenerate more or less in the same position (which is ~ 80-100 km to SW, parallel to the coast). Stratiform region is as close as 50 km. Precipitation does not appear to be significant. 1615 Because all convective cores in the line appear to le ~ 100 km from the coast, we decided to switch to ClimoFar, not to loose vertical resolution on the far guys. 1730 The organized structure over the ocean is beginning to fall apart. However a new cell is building SE of S-POl that we are going to keep an eye on. l739 Reflectivity in small cell now above 50 dBZ. Made some images for web. 1800 Rob and Andrea here. 1825 Switching to Ka-band on. Both Ka and S-band will be operating at 1000 PRF. Because some activity started developing to the N of S-Pol and may be getting on top of NOAA profiler, we decided to to a sector scan, MicroNear135, centered at 0 deg. The rhi will be centered at 30deg. We will start at 1830. 1830 We started the Microscan, but the Ka band is not on yet. 1840 Ka band on. 1910 Started to sprinkle lightly at SPol. 1920 N sector still appears to have most of the action for new convection. however few cells S-SE need to be watched - most of intense cells in N sector are > 90 km range - too far for Ka band. 2000 Ka-band off. Switched to 720 Hz PRF to run climo scans. Running ClimoNear to capture cell approx 42 km/2deg. 2035- Visited by NWS (Mexico) Director, Jose Meitin (NAME ops director) 2145 Fabian (Altair), spoke with S-Pol staff & took pictures. 2200 Switched to climofar mode. There is still convection within 30-40 km of S- Pol but it would be captured well enough using far mode. Generalized convective activity spread out over SMO, but there appears to be convection focused along line running parallel to shoreline (~20-30 km inland).
